Week Six - Baker Response

I agree with Baker’s statement to “Chose books you have loved and actually read.” When doing a booktalk, I believe that it is important to express enthusiasm for the book you are talking about. When discussing a book that you lack enthusiasm for, it may actually show in the tone of your voice and facial expressions. I picture librarians that talk about books they love with eyes that almost sparkle and a tone of voice that expresses energy and feeling. According to Baker, “Before you can choose the right booktalking titles, it’s essential to know your own tastes—it helps you steer away from potential monotony of appeal” (2010). It may be a challenge to find appropriate titles for an audience especially when their interests may not exactly be yours. “It’s helpful at the onset to glean as much information about your audience as you can; their common interests, what they might be expecting, and what kind of program they are hosting” (Baker, 2010).
